With over 20 years in and around the real estate and construction industries, it seemed natural to now inspect homes using the experience and knowledge I’ve gained over the years. From pre-teen years hanging around the real estate office my mom managed to the summers spent building anything from skateboard and BMX ramps to garages, decks and houses with my dad.
I purchased my first home at the age of 20 and spent the next year remodeling my new castle, from the kitchen and bathroom to installing a new heating system and electrical upgrades. By this time I became hooked, I was destined for a career in housing and construction. In 1999 I started my first business - Rent a Handyman - doing anything from changing door knobs to remodeling kitchens, bathrooms and basements to roofing, lots and lots of roofing. I was also getting a lot of experience with the mechanical side of a house: plumbing, heating and electrical.
The next year my dad (having just retired from the USPS) and I joined forces turning Rent a Handyman into Skinner Construction, a full service construction/general contracting company. We offered services for all facets of the building process including: carpentry; masonry; roofing; siding; windows; plumbing; electrical; heating; insulating; drywall and most flooring. Together we built dozens of houses and remodeled hundreds more. This role of a builder/general contractor kept me current on building codes and regulations by requiring continuing education classes yearly.
In 2000 I took a home inspectors training course in Madison WI but decided to put that career idea on hold so I could concentrate on building and remodeling and gaining the knowledge and experience I felt I needed to become an effective home inspector. Well, 18 years later and 5 years of doing inspections, I am confident that I provide quality home inspections that my customers can depend on when making an investment in the American Dream - Home Ownership.
